Many wonderful words have been used to describe Cyprus, depending on which aspect of this island has captured the visitor’s heart and mind. Put them all together and you have a single word: magical.
There is no doubt, however, that the coastline that borders the turquoise Mediterranean waters is a key feature and the magnet that attracts the majority of holidaymakers who choose to visit in summer. Some beaches are sandy – like the sweeping bay of Nissi Beach. Others are rocky, like the area around Cape Greco with its natural sea caves that have been carved by the sea. In addition to the popular and extended sandy beaches with facilities and the latest water sports, you’ll also find small and more secluded coves that have almost been plucked out of paradise.
Whether you prefer to go scuba diving to explore the abundant marine life under the surface, or simply want to absorb the sun while you relax on the sandy beach, the coast of Cyprus will not disappoint.
This is reflected in the dozens of Blue Flag beaches that you will see scattered along the coast. In fact, according to the latest update of the list of Blue Flag beaches, Cyprus boasts no less than 64 beaches that were awarded this coveted certification.
What is a Blue Flag Beach?
For those who are not familiar with it, the Blue Flag is an internationally recognized eco-label issued by the not-for-profit and non-governmental Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), verifying that a beach, marina or sustainable boating tourism operator meets certain standards. In order to qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained. These include high water quality, lifeguard duty, and various services and amenities for bathers. Taking the above into consideration, it is not surprising that Cyprus has earned a reputation as a prime summer destination for all ages.
